The Benefits of Botox and Injectables

Botox and its cousin products have been used for many years as an incredible cosmetic tool. We understand after injection of this medication that it inhibits muscular movement in the injected area. Hence, unwanted lines and wrinkles can be easily diminished. These products were approved for FDA use cosmetically in 2002 for the lines between the eyebrows. Botox brand name (marketed by Allergan) has become a household name with patients as well as Dysport (marketed by Galderma) and Xeomin (marketed by Merz). Cosmetic spending per Wikipedia is suspected to reach 4.7 billion dollars by 2018 for facial aesthetics. Remarkably, Botox Cosmetic has grown 95% in the male market in the past 5 years.

We know that neuromodulator (botulinotoxin) injections are considered safe and highly effective to reduce the sight of unwanted lines. The results can range in their longevity, but are typically 3 to 6 months in duration. Neuromodulator injections are typically used in the top 1/3 of the face to include the glabella (frowns between eyes), frontalis (forehead lines) and my all time favorite, the orbicularis or Crow’s feet. We all know we must age, but crow’s feet should not have to travel down our entire cheeks or up to our hairlines. They just give away our age too readily.  We can sneak them in other areas as well, but we will talk today more for on-label use.

Injections are pretty easy to administer and manage. They take about 10 minutes to be placed with a tiny syringe and minimum amount of medication. Neuromodulators are typically measured in a ‘unit’ dosage. The long history that Botox is too expensive for most is also an old legend as injections can be reasonably priced at about $200 and up a session. A patient does not need to alter their activity too much to receive injections as well. I ask that you do not plan a heavy workout post injections for the remainder of that day.
